Default 2001 KLR250. Plug air box, runs great???

Hello.

I have 2001 klr250. Starts one or two kicks. Idles perfectly normal (choke open). Warms up; close the choke, idles normal. Twist the throttle though and it bogs down. (I bought it off a buddy like this)

Took carbs apart, very basic carb, every thing seems in order. I cleaned it, put it back on and it does the same thing?

Put my hand over two holes on the snorkel of the air box, twist throttle... revs right up!

Eureka! so after asking around locally on why this might be the case, all I got was bunch of shrugged shoulders. I decided to just put gorilla tape over the two holes and ran it all last year. Ran great?

This year I'm curious to get to the bottom of why this occurs? and to make sure I'm not killing my KLR's engine running it like this?

Again, otherwise all seems normal?

Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe someone extra drilled holes in snorkel in a misguided attempt to gain power. Is the air filter in good condition?

Thank you for your reply.

I currently have the air box out. No holes. no cracks. did think it might have cracks but after closer inspection, it just looks like normal seems due to the (kinda) sloppy manufacturing method they used to fuse the plastic parts together at the factory.

Air filter has no tears. All seems solid.

Verified my main jet is 118. Assume that is standard?

When installed put hand over all snorkel holes, feel a good suction on my hand; then quickly dies. Assume this means it has a good vacuum seal?

I'm perplexed?

Just wan to verify if I put it all back together, and run it again for another year like this I'm not somehow HURTING/KILLING the ENGINE running it like this???

I'm guessing the 118 is a standard stock main size. It is for my '06 KLX250. You could probably look at the OEM microfiche if you wanted to verify.

It looks like it has the same CVK34 carb as my bike. I'm wondering if there could be a partially plugged jet or passage in the carb, or if the rubber diaphragm is damaged or not seated properly.

Diaphragm seated properly

Carbs cleaned (again)

Main jet is 118 stock as it is supposed to be.

No holes in air box. filter installed properly after cleaned and oiled (with Seafoam)

Pilot screw backed out to 1.5 and 2.0.

14073-1184 DUCT,CARBURETOR tightened with better hose clamp as opposed to spring.

STILL BOGS WITH THROTTLE! REVS FULL WHEN I PUT MY HAND OVER 2 SNORKEL HOLES???

And... still idles fine like it always did. Starts in 1 or 2 kicks?

I Dunno?

Try posting your question in the KLX250 forum. That's where 95% of the action on this site remains, and your KLR isn't much different from the KLX.
