ORIGINAL: dogdragon

Hmm another EX 500 with magnets destroyed eh? it seemms to be a common problem with that model. I just deplaced one for an 86yr old kwak rider. he thought it was just the starter moter but I found loads of bits of magnet had jammed up the starter chain.
I managed to get a second hand stator and winidings, there is only one magnet by the way.

P.S. you'll need a 4" or 6" 3 legged puller to pull the gerator off the crank.
so why did the magnet destroy? any answers on that?

I can say that we found nothing that could have get cought in between the magnet and the windings.
The machine was about the same age as this one. The magnet is made in one piece as a ring in the flywheel casing. I guess that vibration and age had caused the magnet to break up. when this happens it catches into the windings, which also get damaged.
if I can remember I think it cost £180 for the parts, and that was used parts too.

Like I said, we think it's due to vibration. figure it, that magnet spins with the crank, so it does the same RPMs, those two little pistons cause vibration. The magnets can only take so many vibrations before they just start to break up.
I don't know what material they are made of, but they just cant take it.
I've noticed most generators on most bikes it's the magnets that are static while the windings rotate. This is not true on the EX

I'm checking my zx10a manual now, with u soon, noticed the VFR honda has magnets that rotate while windins stay still, co maybe it's just a bach of magnets from that year that give up

not the same, generator on the RX, ZX10's zx9's &zx1100have external generators. not the same at all (soz about the spelling, but it's 5:30 am here and I'm getting tired), If I remember correctly it's the GPZ 500 & maybe the 550 which has the same generator as the EX.
