Default 1990 EX 500

Hi, This is my first post and I am new to this site, I have a 1990 EX 500 which I have just put in a used starter clutch and alternator, the old starter clutch was not turning the engine and when I investigated found the alternator to be missing many magnets!!! I got a new used one from Cycle Salvage (of CT 06516) who were very helpfull. and fitted it. the bike had stood for 3months and I cleaned the carbs and new fuel/plugs. It runs fine at the lower RPM but doe's not want to go over about 5K I am a mechanic but a boat mechanic so I know my way around engines but need some help in where to look onthis bike, I am a week end rider and not a 'biker' biker if you know whatI mean so some help and advice would be great. it seems like timing but I don't think I changed that with what I did!! Thanks Pete.

Ya, if you aren't putting out enough amperage then the coils won't have enough juice to burn all the fuel. Good lookin' out Dragone.

Well, it was not the timming it appears to be that I did not clean the carbs well and I was having a fuel problem, The bike had stood for some time over the summer and I had not drained them so they got kind of nasty. I have now removed them cleaned them and put them back on and it is running fine. Oh well, now we know!!!

You did not clean them well enough then. Congrats on getting her up and running well.

Hmm another EX 500 with magnets destroyed eh? it seemms to be a common problem with that model. I just deplaced one for an 86yr old kwak rider. he thought it was just the starter moter but I found loads of bits of magnet had jammed up the starter chain.
I managed to get a second hand stator and winidings, there is only one magnet by the way.

P.S. you'll need a 4" or 6" 3 legged puller to pull the gerator off the crank.
