Ok first off I just want to say what's up to everybody here in the forums. This is going to be my first time getting a bike and hopefully this site can help me out. I just moved to California from New Jersey and wanted to get a bike to commute and cruise around. I am only going to be here for 7 months. I have my Cali license test tomorrow and than I am going to schedule a Motorcycle course from there. I just had a couple of questions. What should I look for when buying a used bike? Is a test drive normal? How do you get the bike home? Where can I get riding gear? Does the bike have to be smogged? Other than my license and insurance is anything else required when registering a bike? I'm 90% set on getting a motorcycle right now I'm just not sure about how to go about everything. This would definately help me out. If there is anything I forgot that I should know about please let me know. Thanks-John

well damb.... looks like all your questions have been answered..... except for gear..... go the fremont cycles, try out different helmets. pick out one that fits snug on your mellon.... normally a good helmet to start out with is an HJC.... CL 14 are basically the best bang for the buck..... gotta have gloves, boots, a thick pair of jeans or leathers and a good riding jacket, prefered leather....... pending on your budget..... but ICON makes good jackets...... now to get a good deal on the lids you could go on-line and order it from there.... or just but it from the stealership.... or theres this place in San Jose called ROAD RIDER..... big *** store full of gear...... you know, our type of toys'r'us..... if you need directions PM me and i could show you the link... good luck and hit me up if you want to hang out and ride....

I went to the DMV today and picked up the motorcycle book. They told me I didn't need a California license to register a California vehicle but I have a feeling the license will be cheaper than the out of state fee's. I'm going to get a regular license soon and than set up the m1 and course from there.
Do I take the written test at the DMV before or after the MSF? Thanks again guys.

go to the dmv, take the test, get your permit, go to the msf course, get your ticket, go to the dmv, get your pic taken and your done.

Another noob here.. maybe I'm totally misinformed, so I could use some clarification.

Last month, I took the written permit test - passed (in addition to half the written drivers test). I also took a new pic, prior to the tests. A few days later, I took 9 hours of the MSF in San Diego - passed w/certificate. My plan was to practice on my little 250 for a few months and then go back to DMV for the on-bike licensing (M1). My question.. do I actually have to take the test if I have the MSF cert?

Thanks for your help.

It prolly looks like I'm not reading the above posts so I'll clarify. My understanding is that the CHP course is the one that will substitute for an on-bike test, and not the MSF. Cali riders.. is this right?
