Default Fuel

Would switching from regular fuel to premium cause any damages to my klx250? Mostly running trails. Mostly wondering about the carb. Also is this even necessary? Thanks.

Why do you want to use premium?

I run non-ethanol in my KLX. Usually standard octane because it's available here, but premium goes in occasionally. Premium non-ethanol won't hurt the KLX. Maybe your wallet, but that's another story!

Welcome to KF.

Not really worth running premium unless experiencing preignition... pinging. I run 87 virtually all the time.

Piston speed is interesting because a slow moving piston gives sufficient time (at high loading) to allow cylinder pressure/temperature to increase enough to heat the as yet unburned charge to spontaneously combust at the local speed of sound giving the characteristic pinging sound. Larger pistons also contribute to easier detonation because it takes more time for the flame front to reach all of the charge than on a smaller chamber. The time factor, on the millisecond scale, plays a big part, fascinating stuff. I notice it often while riding my trials bike at slow speed on hot days. If I give a lot of throttle, at nearly idle speed, my little air cooled engine pings away. I suppose I should increase the octane booster I add to the regular no-ethyl gasoline I use for summer rides
