Changing rear tag holder without disconnecting tag light (636 '05+).
I recently purchased a license plate holder to get rid of the original ugly rear guard and tag holder. I was told that you had to remove a lot of things just to get the rear tag light plug through the hole. I found that the tag light can actually be taken apart then threaded through the new and old pieces.
Disassembly:
First, remove the tag light from the fender (2 screws on the inside of the fender). Next, take the cover off (2 screws) and the chrome reflector, the bulb should now be removed. Once that is done just the rubber insulation and metal socket are still together (the plastic backing is there but it falls off once you get the other 2 pieces apart). To get the socket out of the rubber piece just pull the rubber insulation up from the bottom, working it over the socket little by little with the tips of your fingers while pushing down in the middle of the socket with your thumb (make sure the top lip on the socket is down through the rubber before you get too far). At first it feels very firm and gives a lot of resistence but once its starts to go it gets easy. Reassembly is much easier.
