Default 01 zx6 choke ru s really high (3500) idles really rough and dies when I give it throt

Hello I. New to the forum and bikes in general. I just picked up an 01 zx6 and don't t know where to start with this problem. It's starts just fine but must be on choke. It seems to hesitate at first but then rpms climb to 3500 once warm it will idle but jumps from under 1000 to about 4000 then bounces back down. I've tried to ride it but when I let out the clutch and give it gas it dies. I have gotten it moving but have to Rev pretty high. Then it has no power and runs very rough. I don't have much money to pay someone for help . I am pretty mechanically inclined and fairly capable of following directions. I have not done anything yet but plan on pulling carbs and cleaning everything out really good. Is there anything you guys may be able to suggest for a starting place. An or things to be cautious of as I begin down the rabbit hole?

Clean the carbs, verify vacuum lines are not cracked and leaking. Clean the air filter. Then verify that the carbs are synched. If the ride was sitting for any period of time, dump out the old gas at the same time and refresh prior to synchronizing.
Congrats with the new ride.
