I just got the safety done on my LTD 1000 and am putting it on the road (it sat for 5 years before I bought it). The problem is that it pulls quite strong from low rpm's up to 4500 and then it just stops. It will absolutely not go any higher than 4500 while on the road. At idle if you hold it open it will take a long time to crawl over 4500 rpms but it runs rough the whole time.

Any ideas?

I would say badly clogged jets, and/or vacuum leaks.

Take the carbs off and rebuild them. I guarantee it will take care of the problem.

 

Well I know it's not the main jets because they were just replaced. Where do you suppose it could be a vacuum leak?

 

The vacuum leak could be in the lines coming off the vacuum ports. It could also be a torn, or worn out carburettor boot(s). Check by spraying starting fluid around these areas. if you notice a change in rpms then that is probably your problem.

 

I checked for vacuum leaks and there are none. Is there an easy way to check if the timing is off? Or do you have any other suggestions?

You just need a timing light. You could check the mechanical timing advance mechanism to make sure it is free to rotate on the shaft.

The thing is, even if the timing wasn't advancing, you could still get it up there in the RPM's.

 

I would be betting on the float, carb rebuild and not just the jets. These run a CV carb? If so check the diaphram or see if a needle is dropped or stuck.

 

I am thinking I'll stop by the shop tomorrow since I have a day off, but if he doesn't know what it is then I guess I'll be taking the carbs off and apart to rebuild and clean them. It is a very frustrating problem, the engine is smooth and responsive at around 3000 - 4000 RPM but after that it's horrible. I also noticed that it is using an enormous amount of fuel... full tank got me 98Km. I am sure that that isn't right.
