Default Gear Position, Other Issues?

Have ridden the Vulcan 2000 for years. Have an '04 with a starting problem accompanied with the neutral light being out. I checked the resistances per the service manual and they are nowhere near spec so anticipate I need a new gear position sensor. Herein is where the problems begin. Tracing the wires (green, blue, black) from the connector identified in the manual leads to entry into the camshaft cover, right side of engine. Unless I really missed something, that is not consistent with the service manual. Not certain how to reconcile the discrepancy. I would like to remove the old sensor and take a look at it before ordering a new one. Just to make sure I am getting the right part. Does anyone have insight into what I am missing?

Additional background for anyone that can venture help/suggestions. This is supposedly pertinent information gleaned from review of numerous post on this and related issues through the years on this and other forums. When attempting to start with the bike in neutral, kickstand down, the solenoid just clicks. Clutch in or out does not make a difference. If I raise the kickstand and try to start it, the solenoid clicks and a hum is easily heard which I am assuming is the fuel pump. However, not even a remote suggestion of cranking. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
