Default 2001 vulcan 1500 classic. Drive train noise.

Hi guys, got stumped here. Got a bearing noise ( clicking ) coming from my front bevel gear housing, aslo an oil leak coming from the cap. I'm trying to take the bevel gear housing off to replace the bearing but the clymer manual says I must remove the engine from the frame. Is there a way to do this repair without removing the engine? thanks Jay bird

Hi Jay Bird,

I know this is an old thread, but I also need to replace the bevel gears in my 2001 1500 Classic. How did your job end up working out? Did you have to remove the engine? Any 'gotchas' that I need to be aware of?

Thanks,

ET

No need to remove the engine. Take note of the heated oil bathe method for removing the bearing, oil hole alignment on install and keeping your gears as a set. See section 10 in your manual. (the 87-99 factory manual and not the 01 that is.) good luck

Hi Dragone,

Are you saying that I should use the 87-99 manual instead of the 2001 manual? If yes...why? Also, are those tips you mention in the manual, or do I have to look those up elsewhere?

Thanks,

ET

sorry for my poor grammar. I only have the 87-99 manual. So it may be different in your application. Thank you for pointing out my error.

are those tips you mention in the manual
they are listed in my manual, but not sure if your manual lists it or not.
