Interesting. I remember hearing, earlier this year I think, that FMF was in trouble with their home state of CA for selling non-epa or carb approved equipment for on-road bikes. I think they paid a big fine.

isnt 2 bros in ca too

the first ebay seller that refunded me today said they can get fined $250, 000 if they ship that exhaust to me and its not worth it for a $20 sale
no way that can be true, no one is responsible for how that hunk of metal gets used but for the person who uses it

I think its all a bs scare tactic, if they are allowed for off road and racing then thats all they have to say its for

im pretty sure any motorcycle can be setup for racing
is there even a dirt type bike or dual sport bike that is sold as a racing bike only?
or do all the bikes come from a dealer somewhere then get changed into racing

and where is the fmf carb approved catalytic converter exhaust at 80db at
tons of people would buy those here, or do they not want to invest any money on a new product that would have the advantage against all other brands

think at a dealership a legal fmf already installed and ready to hit the streets

and I never tested the thing about the header being illegal too yet
very curious to see if thats really true

I thought if you have an out of state bike and its legal in that state you should be fine

but last night a guy I know who lives here but has his scooter registered in washington so maybe his license is from there too I have no idea

got pulled over and issued a $2200 ticket because everything was not legal on it, exhaust, lights, signals etc.

but I think thats a fix it ticket too, maybe if you get it fixed and signed off then you dont pay the fee
im not sure never ran into that issue myself

I think if you look at the EPA rules, it is illegal to replace the exhaust on your road bike with anything but stock or comparable, and the same goes for carburetor modifications. You could be pulled over in any state with this violation. Just as it is an EPA violation to pull the catalytic converter off your car.

Read on, friends. What happens in California moves north and eastward.

since im into customizing scooters I actually carry a list of vehicle codes on each bike that a cop may try to write a ticket on
as I try to keep them as legal as possible
the only thing they may get me on is using hid headlight, but from what I have read it makes no mention of that being illegal

this one is weird
so to me its cool to use aftermarket on 2012 and older?
as long as its within the db levels they want

Motorcycles registered in the state that are manufactured on or after 2013 or have an aftermarket exhaust system manufactured on or after 2013 must have the federal EPA noise emission label affixed to it in order to be operated, used, or parked in the state.

or if its 2013 and newer it needs the epa label
maybe someone on ebay will start selling those labels!!

but this is about the exhausts, in ca

Muffler (27150, 27151, 27152, 27153 VC)
. Every motor
vehicle shall have a muffler which prevents any excessive or
unusual noise. It shall not be e
quipped with a cutout, bypass, or
similar device. The exhaust syst
em shall not be modified to
increase the noise emitted by the motor of such vehicle so that
the vehicle is not in compliance with Section 27150 or exceeds
the noise limits established for that
type vehicle as outlined in the
vehicle code commencing with S
ection 27200. No motor vehicle
shall be operated in a manner resulting in the escape of excessive
smoke, flame, gas, oil, or fuel residue.

V C Section 27151 Modification of Exhaust Systems
Modification of Exhaust Systems

27151. (a) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of the vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits established for the type of vehicle in Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 27200). No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system so modified.

(b) For the purposes of exhaust systems installed on motor vehicles with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of less than 6,000 pounds, other than motorcycles, a sound level of 95 dbA or less, when tested in accordance with Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J1169 May 1998, complies with this section. Motor vehicle exhaust systems or parts thereof include, but are not limited to, nonoriginal exhaust equipment.
Amended Sec. 10, Ch. 92, Stats. 2001. Effective January 1, 2002

im thinking all they care about is noise, not pollution
so if you can mod the aftermarket to be quieter should be good?
who knows I hate all this legal stuff sometimes its really vague on purpose so they can change there minds all the time

EPA is fed rules and I think they may have some regulatory authority over aftermarket motorcycle exhausts. Look also at CARB.

I've read on ADV of CA LEO inspecting on-road aftermarket exhausts for EPA conformance.

is that off road bikes
or street bikes with off road exhausts

because that 2013 thing I posted makes me think if they can prove thats a new exhaust then where is the epa label
but how would they know the year of the exhaust?

From what I recall, dual sport bikes - like our KLX - on the road.

I don't know how they would know year of exhaust. Guilty until proven innocent?
