Just a suggestion. You might want to go to a track day or AMA road race. Walk through the pits and check out the tire trailers who spoon the rubber for the riders/teams. Sometimes you can get lucky with the used tire stacks they have sitting around. Saves them having to haul stuff, if they can sell to you (behind the trailer).

 

Ones take a long time to heat up if not on warmers and are pretty lethal in the wet, with minimal (barely legal) tread...

you're right about the tear offs...I don't think he'll find the Michelin Power One's yet...too new of a tire and probably not going to be sticky eanough...
