Check out MapSource from Garmin - street level maps. You'll need a memory card if your GPS supports it. Use your PC to download the maps to the GPS and then it will display where you are, zoom, etc. The limit to how much coverage you can download is how much memory you have available, hence the memory card. With the downloaded maps, you can also create routes given start location and destination and it'll compute the best route there.

I also have Garmin Topo maps - they are pretty useful, but only 1:125000 scale so it's pretty course, but has a good bit of stuff on them. When we were in NJ, it had all the forest service roads on it that we were riding on which was cool. Less useful here where I am because there aren't many FS roads and the terrain is pretty flat so I generally stick with the street level maps which also includes rivers, lakes, railroads, etc.
Are the maps free? One of my IT guys is going to give me a copy of the streets and topo for Washington. Do you have a direct link Brian?
No, they are for pay, but some updates may be free between major version releases. "MapSource" is the overall "engine", and you then buy the maps for the region you want. I have City Navigator North America. This came as part of a accessory package that I got w/my GPS for the car which included Mapsouce + City Nav N. Am., an extra memory stick, 12V speakerized adapter, and several mounts. I got mine from http://www.gpsnow.com/ .

My GPS: http://www.gpsnow.com/gmmap276c.htm

Auto Nav kit: http://www.gpsnow.com/gmmap276c.htm#kit

But you can buy the software seperately if you don't need the memory card, mounts, and 12V power/speaker adapter and by itself it is $120: http://www.gpsnow.com/gmmscnnant.htm .

Note that the base map in the 276C at least only includes major features like interstates, rail roads, and maybe lakes and rivers, but no street level stuff, so you really need the maps if you want to make it a whole lot more useful and be able to autoroute between destinations, have search databases for gas stations, and all that.

The topo maps I have are here: http://www.gpsnow.com/gmmstp.htm .

I got most of this stuff over a year ago and while it's not perfect, it's pretty decent and works well on the bike handlebars as well as in the car. I've wired mine directly into my bike's battery so running down the battery is not a problem. It's great for finding your way around an unfamiliar area.
