I have the e-trex style mount on my mountain bike. But because the GPS sits so close to the bars, it takes up too much bar space on the motorcycle - essentially the width of the GPS. The RAM mount is about $40 and puts the GPS up a bit so it only takes up a little bit of space. And it is easier to adjust the position and angle of the GPS. But if you have anough bar space, yours should work fine.

That looks a lot like the mount for my GPSMAP 276C. Here's a not very good photo of the RAM mount:

The cradle itself is the one that came with my GPS. I don't remember the part number I got, but it's holes lined up perfectly with the mount that came with my GPS and I just bolted it on. Maybe it will work with your 172C as well?

Here are some better photos:

Actually, I think it might be this one:

Just remove the center threaded stud. I think I originally bought this one for a camera, but I found that it worked better for my GPS after I took apart the base of the mount that came with my GPS.

Hmmmm, that Ram Mount might work, did you mount your gps cradle to the ram mount or did it come with it. I know my 172 is bigger than the 276, but if I bought an extrafactory cradle (I want to keep one permanent on my bote) that I could attach to the Ram mount it just might work.Goodidea Brian.

Edit. I just reread your post and you used the original cradle and mounted it to the ram. Even if my holes don't line up exactly....I'll just make an adapter. SOLD

I think RAM also makes a "stubby" connecting thingy too, if you think the standard length one may be kind'a tall.

That is some serious rigging of devices I'm seeing.

Upgrade? I don't even use that old Axim, Oh sure it sits on the charger just waiting to be used, but no it just sits. I am currently using the Blackberry 8703e and I hear through the grapevine we are getting ready to head to a mobile device as soon as Windows Mobile 6 comes out.

Oh and Evil, that mount is the one that I am getting, since I have the other half already. I gotta get on that soon.

that's kind of why I'm looking at getting rid of mine. It enjoys too much cradle time also.[]
