Angry WTF is this? Motorcycles are major pollutors

I find this really hard to beleive! This has got to be a load of crap!

Cycle magazine brands motorcycles polluters
Steve Farrell

28 July 2008 17:05

A cycle magazine has claimed motorcycles are up to 11 times more polluting than cars. Sign our petition to allow motorcycles in bus lanes Cycle, the magazine of national cycling organisation CTC, says motorcycles should therefore not be allowed in bus lanes. The August/September issue tells readers: ‘On average their emissions of various pollutants are 5-11 times worse than for cars.’ In...

even THE ****tiest running carburated machines running on 50 year old gas don't make NEAR the "footprint" (as the environmentalist wackos call it) as the cleanest cars.

just ******** attacking somthing they know the populus loves. just like guns and driving fast. nooo surprise there..

maybe i'll do a search and comparison on accumulated Hc counts per the biggest bikes and the most "green" cars if i can find them..

Overall pollution based upon a part per million (ppm) basis and most bikes will lose.......however the important number is pounds (lb) of emissions per mile or lb/mile and almost any bike will beat any car ALL the time.

JMHYEO...being an environmental engineer and all.

Well I looked up what I could from the US EPA and found this:

Nationwide, highway motorcycles are significant contributors to mobilesource
air pollution and produce more harmful emissions per mile than a
car or even a large SUV. Motorcycles currently account for 0.6 percent
of mobile-source hydrocarbon (HC) emissions, 0.1 percent of mobilesource
oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions, and less than 0.1 percent of
mobile-source particulate matter (PM) emissions. The highway motorcycle
standards will reduce the combined emissions of HC and NOx in
the exhaust by 50 percent. Without these further regulations, highway
motorcycles would account for 2.2 percent of mobile source HC and 0.3
percent of mobile source NOx by 2020.

The current federal motorcycle standard for hydrocarbon emissions is
about 90 times higher than the hydrocarbon standard for today’s passenger
cars. Although many of today’s motorcycles will meet the current
California standards, the current California hydrocarbon standard is still
18 to 24 times greater than the current federal passenger car limits,
depending on the displacement of the motorcycle engine.

I don't know if they used the same stacked testing as your finding, but it's possible it might have something to do with the difference in the catalytic converter of motorcycles compared to those in cages. I find it hard to believe it's as bad as they say it is, but as an average joe schmoe what do I know?!
