So we got approved for a new rack mounted server and I'm going to install it in a real server room with AC. But this morning we got a reminder of how bad we need this.

Staff e-mail I sent out a while ago...LOL

As most of you know, the server we have out here was used when we got it 5 years ago. In fact Brad has informed me today that the server was new in 1999. The timing of the new server awarded grant couldn’t have come at a better time…..well a month ago would have been better. Today the server crashed, literally and physically. Staff lost connectivity to documents and printing, and so Brad had me go in and check on the server in person. The first thing I noticed was that the room had to be more than 100 degrees. The second thing I noticed was that physically the top shelf fell on the server which for some apparent reason caused the Ethernet to stop working. (see attached picture) Brad is backing up everything just in case it won’t restart, which is a real possibility. So you might be able to get to stuff for a while but I will let you know when we are going to shut everything down in order to get things tipped back in the right place. Sorry for the inconvenience, but Brad is on top of it from his end, and I will do my best to get things put back up here on my end.

Now Sro don't be hating us for having run this way for 5 years, it just shows you how broke the state is. But we just got awarded a $10,000 grant to buy a new server with loads of space, and a portable AC unit. Going to install it in an 8'X8' room with a slider. Oh yea that reminds me, I need to buy a sliding door lock.

 

yeah i also worked at a place where i had to purchase a small portable ac when i walked in the first day it was about 93 in there an they had 8 servers all in one rack.... YiKES

 

4 hours later and I still haven't heard from the IT guy in Seattle...Stinking IT guys.

Hey don't laugh man. ......ok maybe a little. I'll have a writeup in a couple of months on the new room with pics of course.

 

A sliding door and sliding door lock? Wow that is sum serious security...LOL. I hope your not hold confidential information on that server or passing confidential information threw it. If you are I might go from laughing to crying..

In todays day and age, did you know the largest risk to data harvesting is when your hacked from the inside by current employees who are being malicious or just dont know when to not click on something.

That is a funny rack.. In 11yrs of IT/IT Security, I dont think I have ever seen one stored like that before.
