I had a green mongoose back in the early 90's and it was the love of my life.

Dimondback makes a nice one called the Lucky 24 that I'm a big fan of. It had 14mm axels so you can put freestyle pegs on there and rock it old skewl. Well built, good tires, a bit heavy but it was designed to be beat to crap. Flat paint (which looks cool) Pedals are a bit cheesy but you can upgrade to say a set of crank bros 50 50's or similar pedal. It also uses 24" wheels which makes it easier on a full grown adult male to ride.

Next step up would be a hardtail mtn bike with 26" wheels. The Haro Escape is getting good reviews and comes with a decent component package. Iron Horse makes really rugged mtn bikes for a great price.

(among other things I'm a cycling junkie too.)

my lucky 24

Yup, 12 days we rode from the north side of the golden gate bridge to the us mexico border in San Ysidro. Best trip of my life. First day of highway one over big sur almost reduced me to tears because of the L'Alp D. huez like climbs. Second day kicked a$$ becuase it was mostly downhill into San Simeon. During one stretch I hit 50mph on my bike. SWEET!

I don't do that kind of distance touring anymore, not enough free time, but I'll still spend a day hitting the trails on my mtn bike just to relax.
