I am not sure on you bike but my 250r uses a filter that is inside the bike, you have to remove a nut attached to a circle that will release the filter:

Thanks for the info, I have a 2008 250 but I looked all over it last night and couldn't see it anywhere.. is it behind one of the fairings? Please forgive my blondness but this is my first bike and first oil change and ummm I'm not good at this stuff. Thanks for that link with the pictures but I'm still not sure where exactly I should look to find it.

you should look under the bike. this is just a guess but i am pretty sure that the block is the same. look at the pic, there is an opening in the fairing so you don't even have to take it off
