Default Helmets, Gear, Blood and Tears

There has been a lot of talk lately about people and helmets.... I just had to put in my two cents worth.. A Helmet by itself is stupid if you are wearing shorts and a tank top. If you are going to wear a helmet, wear the rest of the gear also. Most accidents involving MC's do not have casualties to the head. It is usually the body. I am not saying do not wear your helmet. You need to. But if you are going to, you might as well suit up. Most of us have had friends die or get seriously injured because of MC's....

A good friend of mine got hit by a Big Truck a couple of years back at Hiway speeds. He was on one of his Harleys. He was not geared up. No helmet, no leathers... He lost his right leg, along with many broken bones. Here is a pic of us riding. I was taking the pic, look real close at his right leg below the jean line and you can see the shiny metal from the fake leg.

Moral of the story, he had no head trauma at all. So a helmet would not have helped in this case, but if was geared up, it sure might have helped to save his leg. So, if you are going to wear a helmet, wear the rest of the gear that goes along with it.. I am just as guilty as the next on helmets and gear. But better to gear, then have to fight pain everyday for the rest of your life from your fake leg.

I always here, " it won't happen to me" ...... Yes, it probably will. I have been hit. I have layed my bikes down. My buddy here, it was his 20 th or so bike. He's been riding for over 20 years. I have had friends die. And they all thought, " it won't happen to me" ..

Helmet AND gear people....

And, yes, he still rides.... He still out works most people I know. Once a biker, always a biker. And, ya , I know... He has no gear and no helmet. It is tough to teach an old schooler new tricks.. So, all you new people, get used to gear NOW.... Not tomorrow..

Another story about gear.... We were in high school, so this is the early 90's.... Me and a buddy of mine just finished fixing up an old honda CB twin... He goes out for a test drive and does not come back... He did not have his helmet or any gear either... We find him wrapped up under neath a truck.. A Gmc 1/2 ton truck.. Anyway, the lady ran the stop sign, and he ran right into her. He got dragged under the truck and wrapped up into the exhaust...

They had to airlift him to A;buquerque... Long story short, he lived, but he has skin grafts over 80% of his body. He does not wear shorts, or short sleeved shirts because of all the scarring. He limps still to this day. He, also, had no head wounds, serious anyway, but if he would have had gear, he would not have been near as bad.

He still rides to this day too... If you look at my photo album, he is the one on the orange colored cruiser....

Gear up also...and wear your helmet.

We always hear about people preaching wear your gear. Yes I have ridden the streets now for 4 months since 1990. I still wear my gear from the track onto the streets. Kinda show offy to some, sweaty and hot to others. Oh well. Lets just say that after a couple of patches/repairs to the leathers I still use them. I have seen so many riders in a few weeks wear sandals, shorts and tees. Noone likes to lose skin or other parts. That I know of anyhows. Old school or not BR, roll the dice........Too bad about the mishap to your friend. He may yet still appreciate your input.

Ya, I know what cha mean.. I do not usually preach at all.. To each their own. If someone does not wear a helmet or gear, they do not hurt anybody but themselves. And that's a choice that we should all be free to make. We were coming back from our mountain trip on the bike, and I lost count at how many people had on a helmet and shorts and a tank thinking they were safe.

So, not really trying to preach... Just a friendly reminder

Ya, telling my buddy to wear gear is like telling him to stop smoking.....lol. I just hate to see my bros hurt....

Cool on the reminder side of it BR.
I did not mean that you were preaching an age old topic or nothing. My choice is to sweat some and maybe save some. Your buddy made his choices also. Maybe he will come to grips on what is cool or not.

preach on preching non preecher man werd.

so if i wear my helmet and no body armor and bite it, im going to have bodily injuries

and if i wear body armor and no helmet im going to crack my dome open. i think i understand how it works now.

if i wear a helmet only, it looks like i have a really big head.

if i wear my gear and no helmet it looks like i have a peanut head.

so to look proportionate and be safe.....

DONT BE A *** & WEAR YOUR FREAKIN GEAR.

preach on preching non preecher man werd. i totally understand you.
