When I was living in Venezuela, a coworker was bitten by one and had to be flown back to the states immediately. He had just arrived and had not worked on our project for even a week. There is no way that a person could be aware of all of the dangerous creatures in that short of a time.
The houses down there have lots of cracks below the doors, and in general, are not sealed very well at all. So all kinds of critters get in. Thats why a large majority of people down there sleep in hammochs.
Anyway, this guy takes off his house pant and drops them on the floor and goes to bed. The next morning he awakens and pulls on his house pants. A giant centipede was lying in the crotch of his pants. The centipede wraps around his family jewels and starts biting the hell out of him.
I dont know if the ones in Venezuela are considered giant, but I saw them at least 7 inches long. Centipedes are the most freaky insect I have ever seen, and I felt so sorry for that guy. Dam, what a way to wake up! Please see below clips.
