Bike tie down

Well since this is my first truck and ive never put a bike in the bed of a truck before where do i do a tie down for it. im assuming i put the kick stand down. and should i get the racheting tie downs

hoedogg 03-14-2008 02:56 PM

RE: Bike tie down

no kickstand, yes ratchit tie downs. becareful loading your lowers might hit the ramp.

RE: Bike tie down

do not put the kickstand down..... well dirt bikes have different handle bars...but thats where i latch on to to anchor it.... and yes i used those ratchet tie downs... i don trust those ones where you just pull and it tightens up.... i use one on either side of the bike, and usually one across the seat in the back.... id reccomend keeping the bike paralell to the bed rails.... its better, i just leave the tail gate down...

hoedogg 03-14-2008 03:01 PM

RE: Bike tie down

the tie downs will hit the fairing if you connect to the handlebars. what i did was go to the hardware store and take your bolt that holds your bar ends on and get a eye bolt to screw into the end of ur handlebars. just remove the bar ends and screw those in and it's a safe hook up.

ok do i compress the forks

EMS_0525 03-14-2008 03:09 PM

RE: Bike tie down

some say not to compress the forks too much because you can blow out the seals..... but i dont worry about it...... how much you going to be hauling it? and just curious, why you hauling a sport bike so much?

Talca 03-14-2008 03:10 PM

RE: Bike tie down

Yes, in case you hit a bump or anythign the forks will travel as well if you dont compress them the bike will shift position and fall

No, do not use the kick stand, it keeps the bike from compressing, and you want the suspension loaded. Your truck should have some built in bed hooks, 2 up front and 2 in the back, just get some of the quick straps.

Attachment 27465

You can get by with the 2 on the front, but for a bigger bike or for taking the bike a longer distance I always use 4;)

Attachment 27466

I can get three bikes in my truck, but you have to put the one in the middle in backwards. It gets a little complicated, but it still works.

I installed one of these, and it keeps the front tires from moving around.

RE: Bike tie down

If they slip its because you don't take the tails and do a couple of half hitch knots. It can't slip, and it only takes a second to do that. I had a ratchet one break, the metal on some of them is el cheapo.;)

maybe i should have stayed in the scouts a tad bit longer haha

RE: Bike tie down

I use the soft ties and hook them aroung the lower triple clamp thing. Then attach the ratchet straps from the bed to the soft ties.
Get some soft ties man, they will not scratch up your bike like regular straps.

RE: Bike tie down

yes compress the forks enough to maintain tension but don't bottom them out.

on my truck it worked best to wrap the tie down around the top of the tripple clamp (one on each side) over to the sides of the bed. then on the rear i wrapped it around the top of the wheel and ratched each side to the bedrail. never had it shift on me once.

Kohburn 03-17-2008 04:50 PM

RE: Bike tie down

oh - and i would put it on the kickstand to hold it, then attach the left side strap with just a hair of slack, then ratchet down the right side straps, this lifted the bike off the kickstand and i would then put it up.

RE: Bike tie down

i got it in the bed and its all good. it aint moving at all. i made some ramps out of 2x8s . i got a kit to make my own at lowes. works just fine.

rocketrotary 03-17-2008 05:47 PM

RE: Bike tie down

Speaking of bed, I wish I was in mine right now. I'm tired as hell. But, not to hijack or anything, having a ramp for your truck is a life saver.

Kohburn 03-17-2008 07:18 PM

RE: Bike tie down

its not as convenient not having my pickup anymore - now i have to use the trailer or buy one of those hitch motorcycle racks.

hoedogg 03-18-2008 03:26 PM

RE: Bike tie down

another thing i do when hauling a bike is when i first take off give the wheel a little shake back and forth to see how much movement is there then tighten if needed
