smoking/ carb issues
Now, before i get started im going to ask alot of stupid questions..now that thats clear we shall proceed...
i bought this bike (94 kx 250) great shape replace a few things nothing toooo major ( clutch basket, wheel bearings etc ) but since i got this bike it has always smoked alot..i am new to the offroad scene also to a 2 stroke...
i took my bike out last week let it warm up for a good 10 mins and rode around for awhile bike worked fine but then it started to bog the more i rode..i replaced the plug with a brand new one because i figured that might have been the issue....i took it out today and the same thing happened again today..so i took the carb off to see if it was dirty and what not.. now with the questions
i changed my fuel mix from 32:1 to 40:1 now from my understanding i leaned out the fuel being one bottle of premix for 4 gal of fuel = 32:1 so iv been doing one bottle to 5 gallons of fuel= 40:1 BTW I use the honda hp1 premix
i looked at my reeds and they have a pretty big gap so im going to replace those..but my jets are the real main question i suppose... as the bike sits the main jet is 150 and my pilot jet just happens to be broken but looks to be a 42(bad part about buying a used bike) i have a pro circuit platinum pipe with a fmf power core 2...my current elevation i would have to say roughly 3500 feet..iv been thinking about just going back to manufacturer recommendations with a 165 main and 45 pilot and back to a 32:1 mixture to have a good base to start from..i dont know if i am thinking waaaayy to far into things being this is my first experience of the jetting process and by no means am i Ricky Carmichael i just like to ride on the weekends

Welcome, Amish. I guess the good news, is that it's better for a 2-stroke to smoke a little than to run too lean. I think the Honda HP stuff is synthetic, isn't it? I've found that synthetics in the mix, in a reasonably tuned engine, tend to smoke very little. Your ratio sounds about right (to me), so that takes us to the air/fuel mix. Guessing your plug looked a little brownish and maybe oily? What plug are you running? (Help, guys?) My only question (in my mind) is why the former owner went with smaller jets after the pipe mod? How's your compression? Getting any oil past the rings?
There is plenty of KX help on here. Stay tuned....you'll likely get plenty of advice. I think we can get you smoothed-out.
Welcome, again.

Jeff that is correct the hp is a full synthetic i havnt really tried anything eles being my local "stealership" is very expensive..what do you use/recommend? As for the plug you are on the money it is alittle brownish and oily...im using the ngk iridium BR8EIX...I thought about doing a plug chop test but i dont knoe what im lookin for at at 14 bucks a plug i think not knowing what is good or bad is not worth it know what i mean...when i was riding i was getting the booowhaaa if im putting that in the right perspectivr and on other forums iv been hearing about "eric gorr" and from what i read on his website it is running lean...but my thing is if it is running lean to guve me that why is it smoking so much... understanding this is my first dirtbike i know cars...i might be thinkng too far into but looking at the plugs knowing basics plugs tell me rich all the smoke and the long smoke trail when ripping through the gears yells rich..i have very lean jets in and the booowaaahh is from too lean...im just not graspingbthe concept...from what i was told from the prv owner is he put a new top end in and that was roughly 20 hrs on my part and however many on his that i dont know...but the compression feels good? I mean i need to put weight on the kick starter for it to go down...is that what you mean?...thanks for your help and those who might help along the way and thank you for the welcoming
