Options to extend riding range on KLX 300
We all know the KLX 300's fuel tank, at 2 gallons, is not great. Since I use this bike for off-road and BDR routes, I need to extend the riding range even though I get 65-75 mpg.
Currently, I strap a 1 gallon rotopax fuel container (3.5" x 10" x 13" and weighs 10 lbs full) on the rear rack. It works well - cheaper than replacing the existing fuel tank with a $400 IMS 2.7 gallon tank. I see that Acerbic makes a 3.7 gallon replacement tank, but not sure it really fits the KLX 300.
I am considering buying a rotopax 2 gallon container (4.5" x 13" x 18" and about 16 lbs full). It will fit on the rear rack, not conflict with the side panniers, and extend the range to +/- 250 miles. I will probably have to stiffen the rear suspension for the added weight. It will sit directly over the rear wheel - not "behind" it. My concern is still having too much weight in the back.
Wondering if anyone has tried this option instead of replacing the fuel tank.
Thanks for ideas and comments.
