I'm going to have to sort something out to take my range past the 250 km mark.
I have been looking at the Rotopax system that could be fitted to the OE rear rack (Kawa' states loads up to 5KG are OK.)

I've been on two long rides recently and got 143km and 140km out of the stock tank before reserve (mixed terrain, 95% off road.) Main tank holds 5.2 litres, so that's a conservative 26 km/litre.

A 1 gallon Rotopax will hold 3.8 KG of petrol so I'm under Kawasaki's recommended limit even if the tank and fittings weigh 1 KG.

I'm thinking, one of these.



With one of these to fit it up.



I'll fab' a bracket up that centralizes the load of the Rotopax fitting as far forward on the rack as possible. (Don't want it hanging off the back too far, although the dimensions of the tank are similar to the rack.) Dimensions: 9 1/2 L x 13 1/4 W x 3 H

My math gives me a conservative total range of 285 km. Main (5.2 litres), reserve (2 litres) and Rotopax (3.78 litres.)

Cost to me will be about AUS $150. I think it's quite reasonable.

Increases capacity to an even 10l and saves a bit of weight at the same time.

i always thought that the tank was 8L 6main 2 res....i know once you get down past the 5L mark it does not quiet pick up the fuel easily.

i bought a tail pack, strapped that on, then i either put 1 or 2 5L jerry cans in it or food, depends which one i can go with out, all up it cost me $50 and that gives me a range of 400-450k's

 

Thanks for the offer Neil, but I'll pass if you don't mind. I'm after something modular that I can use on another bike when I get one. Still saving. Not long now though. I'l eventually get another Rotopax tank and mount so I can fit them inside the pannier racks either side of my new bike. Planning for the future.

 

I think the Roto is easily the best deal for the money. I plan on using that setup when I take a trip.

The BB kit is easier but I personally dont like the look and the cost for what you get, not good. Same with the Acerbis tanks. $200 plus for an extra 0.7 gallons.

Send pics when you get a good spot to mount.

07 and earlier have 1.9 gallon tanks. 5.2 litres main and 2 litres reserve, Tho 09 bikes have a larger 2 gallon tank.

I don't think that'll stay in place long the way I ride. Nice idea though.

Seen em, but I don't think they fit the plans I have for the new steed. I can't ride bpth bikes at once but I can switch the tanks between bikes.

 

The roto pax also gives you the benefit of a flat top for more mounting options.

I'm sold, now if I can ever get enough time off to go anywhere.
