ZX-9R dies when choke is opened up when starting
Hey all. My name is Jason and I am new to the forums. I have a bit of an issue with my beloved 1998 ZX-9R. Here is the situation...
Upon starting the bike, you close the choke all the way until it warms up. As it warms up, you slowly start to open it back up, correct? My issue is, as I open the choke, the bike starts to die, unless youclose it back up. If you open it all the way, it dies.
Any ideas on what the problem is?
Thanks in advance,
Jason

hmm, normally when a choke is "opened" it allows extra fuel to get things started. When the ride is running, you can slowly turn down the choke to off when the ride is warm enough to run on its own. Do not allow the ride to run with the choke open for too long.

I think you may have the terms backwards, never-the-less, that is exactly my point. But in my case, the bike will NOT rev up as the bike gets warmer. The temp will go up, and eventually the fans will turn on, but the RPM's will never go past 3k, even when the choke is all the way "closed/opened" whatever you want to call it.

Ahoy Stymied9.
Did you buy the bike like this or did you screw it up with a jet kit yourself?
The bike is running too rich.
Wait, let me phrase that more gently: your bike is running too F-wording RICH. Restore the stock jetting, (and remove the aftermarket pipe that probably preceded this tragic bit of tuning, and enjoy long engine life and increased fuel efficiency.

I just had this happen as well, one day she ran well the next day couldnt choke it without dying and wouldnt get to the point of idle. replaced fuel filter and it fixed my issue for the most part, then replaced plugs and shes back doing well again.

hey ? here. how many miles were on the bike when prob started? also must say im completely satisfied with vance and hines jet kit and enjoy my m4 slip on pipe. best sound and way more fun to ride not to mention has increased back pressure to minimize backfire on deceleration. anyway check pilot adjusment near your coolant reservoir AND adjust clockwise to adjust pilot/jet needle diameter opening.
clockwise=more gas
counter clockwise= less gas

Choke lever should be pushed forward for normal run. This would be "closed".
Choke lever should be pulled back, towards the rider, for cold/1st start. This is "open".
High humidity will have a bogging effect under 3k rpm on this bike when jetted and with full-exhaust.
Keep your fuel filters replaced and only run premium. Make sure your coil sticks are outputting 100% and you put in fresh plugs every year.
