Default 1998 zx7 no start...need help

i am trying to fix the bike for a friend. The bike instruments light up when the key is turned but dim when you press the start button....the starter does not turn over and the fuel pump doesnt even prime. the fuse junction box does click but thats it....when i jump the starter is turns over but the plugs dont fire....no spark, start, or fuel pump prime....sounds like a fired electric box to me....anyone have any ideas?

The relays have been an issue on some of the zx7's. but, are you getting voltage to the starter motor and pump? Most often is the battery does not have the umph and should be replaced. Good luck

i changed the battery and also have a charger on it. there is no voltage going to the starter or pump and the battery and fuses are good....which electrical unit would that be related to?

right on, so since you verified no voltage out of the relay, you must have checked the input voltage to the relays at the same time to isolate where the possible issue is? How did that go?

well the starter relay is getting voltage and if i cross it then the starter rolls the engine but there is no spark at the plugs and the fuel pump doesnt even prime. So i was wondering if the fuse box controls all these things.... i can hear it click when i press start but that doesnt mean its good....

- no fuel pump prime
- no spark
- no start unless jumped....

hmm, since your friend does not have a manual, check out the General Discussions section for manuals. It is always nice to see the schematic while testing.

k i am downloading one as of now. i noticed there is the junction box which i think is the black box. but there is also another small square electrical box there. i believe there is four or five wires going to it, do you know what this does?

i looked on ebay and it looks like that is the ignition relay. i would think that turns on the fuel pump and controls the starter....maybe that is it! what do you think?

very well could be, if the ignition system isnt working then it wont matter if you rig the starter to spin, it still wont catch. The manual should have a way to test the relay, hope its a quick fix. Welcome to KF!

see page 15-39 for the fuel pump relay test and do not forget about the starter lockout switch or the Neutral Switch.
