Default valve adjustment BOOOOO!!!

Anyways my 03 zx6r is due for a valve adjustment check, it hit 15k a few days ago. now ive seen alot of how to's (mostly for the 02 and below) but it seems fairly easy, but i dont have a service manual. I have pretty good mechanical skills, ive also did my own work, built engines , replaced heads, and other small things, but i dont think i wanna get involved with this unless i HAVE to, im gonna call around this week and see how much it cost to have a dealer do it and go from there. Has any of you done this and how much did it cost. thanks

Since your that mechanically inclined, do it yourself and save about $300, give or take. The only real hard part is getting the cams back in and degreed right. That's why I love shim over bucket motors. Don't have to remove the cams.

are you being sarcastic, you have to remove the cams for the shim over bucket. anyways i might as well get a ape tensioner to. whats tools do i need. is the fuel injected bikes much different than a carbed bike.

No, I'm not being saracastic. I don't have to remove the cams. The shim sits below the rocker arm. I take a measurement, swap shim if necessary and move on. On bucket over shim motors, you check all the tolerances, remove the cams to get to the shims to swap out, then re-intall the cams.

I've never owned a FI bike, but I don't think that makes a difference on valve adjustment. As far as tools, just basic metric sockets and wrenches to get everything out of the way and feeler gauges to check tolereances. There are cam degreeing tools for when the cams go back in.

Just drop $30 on a clymer's manual.

Having a service manual is the best possible investment you can make, period.

Or $5-10 on ebay for a factory manal on CDRom. Send me your email and I'll try and get one to you. Yes, on shim OVER bucket set-ups you don't have to remove the cams. There is a shim bucket tool/ depresser that pushes the edge of the bucket down and you can slide the shim out. The don't use that system on ultra high RPM engines because of the extra weight (The shim is about the size of a nickel or bigger) and also becauseat high RPM's like the newer 600's, the shim can get spit out and cause catastophic damage.

The ZX6R's have Shim UNDER Bucketso the cams have to be removed to adjust the valves. It's a pain in the A$$ but that design is what allows the engine to rev up to 16000 RPM to make all that Horsepower.

You can do this fairly easily if you have replaced heads & built motors. If you're mechanically inclined as you say, it will be no problem for you. Just follow the instructions and double check the timing & cam marks. The easiest way is to take your clearance measurements first and write them all down. Then remove the cams & shims and measure the shim thickness and replace with the appropriate sized shim. You will need a shim assortment or shimkit (About $80 on ebay from hotcams) and some digital calipers to make it easy. Change your plugs to the CR9EK (#4548) while you're at it. $5.49 at O'reilly Auto Parts.

Recommended Valve Check/ Adjustment interval is 15,000 miles. Oill changes every 7,500 miles and spark plug clean & regap is every 4,000 miles!
