shifting prob

Default shifting prob

i have an 98 zx6r and sometime in 1st gear then i really get on it (like redline or close) when i go to shift up it goes into nutrual, or it shifts really hard can someone explain this to me thanks. Could it be my shift fork

It's a long throw from 1st to 2nd gear but check your chain tension, keep it right at spec, it makes a huge difference. I check mine once a week or every other ride. Also check the slack in your shifter lever. In older bikes, it can get some play. I beleive there is a hydraulic or spring adjustment on your bike.

do u know where i can get the chain tenstion spec i usahly keep a close eye on it. Also do u want play in the shifter lever thanks

It should say the tension specs on your swingarm, but every bike I have ever owned is anywhere from 7/8" to 1" of travel. This is measured about the center of the chain and check it every 16" or so.

Also, you do not want play in your lever. It's not going to be perfectly tight, but the tighter the better.
