Default Shifter too loose?

What's up yall,
Im riding a 96 ZX6R and everything seems to be going just fine.
The reason for this post is because I was filling up the tank this morning and I examined my shift lever because some of the rubber on the end cap was getting old and is getting close to coming off. But when I jiggled the lever it seems to be a little loose. It always jiggled up and down a little, but its got some side to side action going on now.
Trying not to be paranoid about it but I had a buddy who's shifter came off while we were riding and he had to go back and find it...a mishap I am trying to avoid.
Let me know if you recognize what I am talking about and maybe how I can tune it up.
Im a newb, so any advice is accepted.

The pinch bolt is loose or missing. Just replace and or tighten it and it should be good. 10 mm wrench needed.
