Default problem not catching 2nd gear

so my brand new 636 sometimes has problem catching 2nd gear, it'll kinda hit then pop into neutral, then when i up it again to 2nd it makes one hell of a clunk unless i rev it up high before i kick it into second. i just learned to speed/power shift, whatever its called, and that seems to work decent. is that bad for the tranny or eng? It's just annoying that when i shift normal, it clunks into 2nd and sometimes doesn't even catch. i'm i just that much of a noob or should i have my bike checked? thanks guys

I've had issues with this, does it do it to you under all circumstances when clutching it? I know that the only times that I have issues not catching second is when I'm really getting on it, like racing at the track or strip. Mine is just rider error... If it keeps doing it then take it in, that's what the warranty is for...

This is fairly normal I think. It has happened to me on my 02 ZX6R a couple of times. I think it has to do with timing of the shift in relation to RPMs or something. I believe the cluthces on these bikes are synchronized. I would worry more if it won't go in at all or if it falls out of gear. I'm no mechanic though so hopefully one of the other guys can be more helpful. Just wanted to share my thoughts.

mine does it too, kawi's are known for it. If you use squishy boots or shoes it makes it worse, the throw distance between 1-2 and 2-6 is alot larger. it takes more power to shift into second. it had a syncro's but reving it up saves the syncro's though.

Try adjusting your shift lever to take up any slack and to shorten the throw needed to switch gears.

Just power shift it, I never use the clutch except to take off in first and to down shift. Power shift it is the proper way to go through the gears.

Just a tip, when power shifting and moving up through the gears, keep moderate pressure on the shifter, at all times, with your toe and when you cut the gas it will slip in no problem, all the way to 6th.

Adjust the lever down a little. You are probably not fully engaging it and it slips out of gear. Also adjust your chain too and maybe switch oils to Synthetic.

YUP my 2004 does the same thing! I'm going to switch to full synthetic and i guess just not shift as fast. How do you tighten a chain?

Loosen the rear axle nut, adjuster locknut and rotate the adjuster bolts counter clockwise, evenly on both sides, so you have about 1 1/4 inches of slack in the chain. Check your owners manual; it shows you how. Dont forget to tighten the locknuts and Axle Nut after you're done.
