Default highway rpm's

please bare with me. Im not new to riding motorcycles but im new to streetbikes. I just bought my first streetbike which is a 93 ninja ZX6. It has quite a few mods but my question is that im doing about 6k rpm goin 70 mph on the highway. Is that too high for prolonged periods of time. I am planning on using it to drive about 25 miles each way to college. Also off the subject, Would it be better to use royal purple motor oil insted of conventional oil?

i usually keep it around 9 or 10 on the freeway that way im in the power band when i need to bone out. royal purples good stuff, but cost alot more so commuting would add up fast in the oil change dept.

Hi Max,

Welcome to the forum. 6k rpm is normal at 70. At 6K, these bikes are just beginning to start working. It's only less that half of their rpm range.

I am usually at about 8 or 9 K RPMs oon the freeway and have not had any problems yet. I just did changed my oil today and no issues either.

I would like to post a question myself (Not trying to HIJACK your post MAX)

...i am going to be picking up my '01 ZX-6R in a week or so, and have to travel from Milpitas to L.A. (+/- 6 hour ride). How long should i be able to travel before i have to let the bike cool off? (or would each time i stop for GAS and rest be enough coolling time?) I am brand new to riding, and this will be my first bike. The reason i am purchasing a bike so far from home is because of the GOODEAL i am getting!

...Again, i am sorry to HIJACK max, but i didnt really want to start a NEW thread just to ask this.

You should be able to ride it the whole way minus stopping for gas. Just keep an eye on the temperature gauge. At highway speeds it should usually be around 170-190 in slower traffic. I have seen mine go up to 215 - 220 before the fan kicked in.

I have not seen any stats on what is too hot but I would say if it climbs over 220 for a long time pull over and let it cool off for a while.
