Default Gutting out the cat

Just curious if anyone has gutted out their cat? I heard from someone that you lose a little power below 4k rpm, but gain alot after that. Is this true? If any one has, how did you do it and what do you think? Any input will be appreciated. Thanks

ok guys, here's the deal, i bought my 05 zx6r like 4 months ago, and luckily i was able to get an extended warranty on it for another 500 bucks. but the sucky thing is that i won't be able to get a aftermarket exhaust for the bike because no matter what i do, i'll void my warranty, even if i get a slip on, that usually means i'll have to cut something or alter something in some way that the dealership will know that i messed with the exhaust system, and in turn void my 500$ warranty... and also i don't really want to buy an exhaust system until i've paid off my bike anyway... so here's what my solution is... when i used to have my zx7r, i had bought it with a GUTTED PIPE, which means all the packing and all the things to muffle the sound are gone and it's as loud as it can be. so my solution is to buy a stock 636 muffler off ebay and totally gut it, that way i'll still be able to put my original stock one back on if anything happens to my engine for the warranty...

i purchased a stock exhaust for 55 bucks off ebay, then totally cutt the thing open with an electric saw, rotary sawzall, and then took out the insides with a dremel... now here's pics of the inside of all your stock 05-06 636 exhausts...

now i've taken everything out and have had one of my friends dad to weld it back for me(the exhausts are stainless steel if you were wondering) i'm also planning to paint it with some low gloss black heat paint to match the swingarm... so in all i hope that this muffler will be a good turn out for me, or at least hold me off until i can buy the akro evolution FULL exhaust system... i'll keep everyone updated because i'm actually putting the muffler on tonight... and if u have anything negative to say about how squidly and stupid this is, please keep it to yourself, i know how squidly this will turn out, but this is all i could really come up with on a fixed budget... i mainly wanted to post this so everyone could see the inside of their stock exhaust and how it works. Also, this whole project all together cost me $103.00..... $55 for the muffler and just a little more bucks shelled out for the replacement saw and dremel peices(keep in mind i've had all the nessassary tools on hand)... so there you have it, an aftermarket sounding stock exhaust, for under 120 bucks...

thanks for reading

ok here's the deal, the picture i posted up was just an opend exhaust, nothing dont into it, just cut open... now i don't have any pictures of what it actually looks like with everything out but i'll show you what i cut...

this first picture is how air and sound travels through your stock exhaust in red...

and heres a picture of with everything i cut in yellow

and here's how the air is supposed to travel through the gutted stock exhaust now...

Thats interesting info, but I have a slip in yoshi pipe. Im talking about gutting out the catalytic convertor that is built into the header. Anyone have experience with this?

You can do it but it's tricky with the 05-06 header section because of the angle it's turned up. Most people take a long screw driver and hammer the honeycomb out of it but if you want a clean job, take it to a muffler shop and have them cut it open so you can have better access to it or have them gut it. Tell them it's for racing use or they may not do it. I have a header on ebay if you're interested in modifying that one.

You will lose some low end due to the lack of back-pressure but will gain a lot on the top-end.
