Default Tires, Tires, Tires

Need new tires. Most of my riding is comute miles and I need a tire thats a little harder in the center but yet still grippy at the edges. The stock Dunlops wore right to the belt in the center but still has tread on the edges( yeah I know all work and no play makes me a real boring rider.) Any suggestions. Also is everyone running a 190/50 on the rear now?

I pulled a 12 hour run to Anacortes on non oem Qualifiers, did some playing then rode back . Did a Vegas 7 hr run, played not as much then came back. 4400 miles, showing a smallflat spot in the center, but they are playing well. I would imagine that I can get another 2000 miles easy on them for another cruise.

After reading all of the posts in these forums about tires, and based on my own 25+ years of riding, I can't understand why it's so (%^&#) difficult for tire makers to develop a commuter tirewhich is still reasonably grippytoward the edges, but has a long life in the center!! If auto tires can last 30K miles or more (yes, yes, I know different load and stress issues) why can't bike tires (designed for many of us who lead pathetically boring lives) at least approach 8-10K?????

I'm with you Jeff. They should be able to make a tire that would last longer, but then people won't buy them as much. I comute 4 hrs everyday, about 180 miles replacing a set of tires every 5000 miles, its going to get pretty costly.

Talked to a friend today, he run Bridgestone Battle Axe on a FZ1. Says they are lasting longer than Pilot roads. And they have good grip.
