WTF. My post was so profound, they triplicated it. Clearly I don't know the POWER of the Dark Side...

Calamarichris, where did the sound deadener come from? Is it made for the 500r? I would really like to quiet mine down.
I have no mods of my own to mention as of yet.
Solo seat cowl is on my to do list.
Largermirrors too.

Hey Paulie.
It's the stock foam sheet that comes on the larger Ninjas. I noticed that my '02 ZX9R came with it, and that bike has a smoother, quieter engine.
You can order the foam from Bikebandit.com or Ronayers.com or your local dealership. I think it was ~$150 bucks for a complete set, including the foam/foil liner from the bottom of the gas tank. You must trim them with scissors and make them fit on the 500.
It struck me as odd that the 6R and 9R came with this foam and our 500 does not. The 500's screw-locknut valve adjustment is a good design and is much easier to adjust than the 600/900/1000's shim-under-bucket adjustment, BUT more moving parts = more engine noise. Also it strikes me as odd that Kawasaki saw fit to put the foam/foil liner at the bottom of the ZX9R's fuel tank but not the 500, when the 9R already has a huge airbox between the engine and tank, (while the 500's fuel tank rides just above the hot engine.)
I've swapped rides with a 250 owner and the foam definitely makes a good difference in the perceived noise that gets to you while you're on the bike, BUT since the engine is exposed you'll still hear some of it.
I was startled at the noise when I took the bike up to Palomar the first time. The noise suddenly got REALLY loud when I had the bike leaned over. Then I realized it was the sound reflecting off the asphalt.
But when you're upright (and not riding next to any curbs) the foam does a nice job of deadening the noise. (Much better IMO than getting louder aftermarket pipes, which really don't make the bike any faster.)
I'm in Carlsbad, CA if you ever want to swap rides and see the difference.
Peace!

RE: tell me about your 500r
Lets see, Ive been working on my bike for a little while. Here are the current "mods", but most of you probably wont like them... but hell its my bike lol.
I got rid of the rear fender, and put little CF looking turn signals on
Got CF looking mirrors
Got CF looking levers (and 2 days later it tipped over and bent the clutch lever)
Crashed it, and decided on putting it back together and spray some paint myself (its not worth anything, so I figured a 20 dollar paint job would be alright)
I built a little crash bar for it, but those pics are not up yet.
Oh, I havnt painted the tank yet (cause ive been riding it way too much to justify a few days without riding lol) all in time though
