Default RE: Shifting Question???

If I'm looking for that kind of fun, I'll take my 9R up to 5000rpm.

This brings up an interesting (to me) question. At what rpm would you shift to minimize wear (i.e. get the most miles out of your engine)?
Fewer piston strokes = less wear, but riding it below 2500rpm (when it tends to vibrate worse) can't be as good for the engine as keeping it in the smoother range around 3500-5000rpm, can it?
I'm sure the jerky operation at lower rpm has got to cause more wear on the chain/drivetrain, but what about the engine? Anyone have any insight on that?
Peace!

True, true. Lugging the engine is very bad.

When I ride my son's 500 I like to do the 10-12 thing just for the excitement. He's been riding less than a year so I'm sure he's doing the 4k thing most of the time.

Not really. At 5K, it will still walk away from a screaming 500.
And to BurntOrange: father or no, if you were my Dad doing that to my bike, I'd blister your @$$ with a leather belt.
Peace!

hahaha, I like a warmed up machine and modulate my rpms. T1 is faster than T3 lets say. I do not hit the limiter if not in gear, kinda like not dry firing a bow. My engine mods in '91 with many track miles on the ride, I am still happy with it. Longevity has been good. I am only estimating 50k miles on this engine, but I guess what I am saying is, who in theyre right mind buys a sport ride just to stay in the 5k rpm range? If you were buying an air compressor, slower rpms with iron jugs will last longer than the higher revved units with aluminum jugs. But the revs are not regulated by the rider either.

In the manual it shows what speeds you should shift at...

1 --> 2 at 9 mph
2 --> 3 at 15 mph
3 --> 4 at 21 mph
4 --> 5 at 27 mph
5 --> 6 at 34 mph

6 --> 5 at 19 mph
5 --> 4 at 15 mph
4 --> 3 at 12 mph
3 --> 2 at 9 mph
2 --> 1 at 9 mph

It says to make sure when you downshift you are below 5000 rpms

Never claimed I was in my right mind, just stating that I perceive a ZX9R at 5000rpm makes more thrust than a 500 at 11k.
And people change over the years. I bought that 9R back in June of '02 when I was newly married & still squidding hard, everyone was listening to a white rapper named Eminem, America had not yet invaded Iraq and I'd just gotten rid of my POS Honda Superhawk.
A good deal has changed since then.
Peace!

P.S. And to Chinh9, this is one case where I definitely would NOT abide by the owner's manual. They must put those recommended shifting points so early to make the EPA & CARB happy, because your poor engine would be seriously lugging at those speeds.

He knows better. Besides I don't ride it too often. I'm too fat and old. That thing is a far cry from the comfort of my Nomad.

If you like 5k then you will love 9k Chris. The throttle response at 9 and up is explosive.Rolling on througha corner andgoing through the gearsat 11k to the next corneris like heaven. Love that light front feeling, dam I need to get to the track!
Your are still being conservative and not putting much wear on the motor either.
