radiator fan
So, when does this radiator fan operate anyway? I zipped around town yesterday for about 45 minutes in 90+ heat and the fan never went on (at least not that I know of). also checked it after I stopped since the ownwers manual said it could go on then.
Thanks in advance!

check the fuse under the seat first. if thats okay you can check the operation of the fan by unplugging its harness and applying 12v. if it spins, youre good to go.
but i dont think it comes on until temp starts to get up near the red on the gauge?

It seems to only come on when it's really hot, approaching red. I've only heared it when I stop at a red light or when I arrive at home. The fan is pretty noticeable when it comes on.
Cool. Thanks. I'll check the fuse out. I was surprised how hot it was, but the temp gauge was about halfway between normal and red and even the frame around the head was steamin'! (not actually steaming, mind you, just super hot)
on my 04 ex500 i turned the key off and my fan ran for a little bit then shut off.... i cant hear my fan but i felt a warm breeze on my legs and looked down and it was spinning away. Mine kicks on when the needle pass the Coolant temp icon in the guage.
The fans on both of my 500s have been really quiet. If it weren't for the warm knee-breeze, I wouldn't've known they were on at all.
And mine comes on when the needles about half-way across the range, in the middle.
Peace!

mine is loud as hell. it sounds like an angry hornet or something caught under the tank.
i remember the first time i heard it, pulled into the garage, turned off the bike, and was like wtf is that noise? looked under there "oh, its the fan!"

I've heard it running after turning the ignition key to [OFF].
And since we can remove the key when the ignition it turned to off, we can conclude that it will continue running.
Because I live near the coast (which is cool) and because lane-sharing is perfectly legal in California (which is even cooler), my fan seldom comes on.
Peace!
