Default '06 engine in a '98

Hey guys,
I'm new to the forum and was wondering if the gear heads out there know if an '06 engine willswap into a '98. Now for the background (in case you're curious). A friend of mine gave me this bike, and I'm thinking about replacing the engine with a used one because I can'tget it to gointo gear. It felt like it shifted down into first, but when you let the clutch out, it doesn't go. It will also freely roll, as if in neutral, when in first, and it won't shift up into second. I split the cases on the engine, but I couldn't find anything wrong. So now I'm thinking about just buying a used engine that I know will work, instead of spending money on a gasket set, rings, and bearings to put the old engine back together.
Thanks
JP

Welcome to the forums.

My take on this is since you already have the cases split, would it be cheaper just to rebuild it? Inspect the dogs and gears while it is apart and replace the clutch pack if needed or springs. Double check your cable adjustment and off ya go!
