RENEWBIE after 27 years away
Yeah, 27 years! Now I have a "new to me" lightly wrecked 94 Ninja 500 wintering in my basement. The fairing and clip-ons were beaten off when the last owner wrecked it. This bike is going to be a BEATER for me to re-learn riding. I am not going to spend the big bucks to replace the fairing, fairing mount, headlight, and turn signals. I plan on installing a street-fighter fairing like this http://www.1cruiser.com/sa/p/FAIRING...K_50MM_CL_.htm
ISSUES: This bike sat in an impound lot for one year in Minnesota with a full tank of gas. What kind of shape do you think the carbs will be in? Should I drop some oil on top of the pistons to soak the rings for a while? No visible frame, fork, or rim damage. I am going to have to figure out where all the wires go (the fairing/headlight assembly was ripped away).
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome Back Kawacon. the street fighter fairing looks stealthy. As far as the bike being in the impound for a year in Minnesota with a full tank of gas you might want to drain the gas and see if there is and rust or anything in the tank. If so you are going to have problems. I am not sure about the pistons and soaking the rings. It sounds like a good ideas. I imagine that the bike is not in a running state currently?

Yeah, that's me. "I'm the one out of four"[&:]
The bike? No it hasn't run in over a year. I brought it home and haven't done anything to it yet. My fun money account is zilch right now, but I am at least going to order the clip-on handle-bars so that I can at least sit on it properly while I make motorcycle noises.
It looks like there is not damage to frame, forks, engine, wheels, or coolant system.

Welcome to the family.....
Def drain the tank, pull the carbs, drain and clean those. Make sure you flush the fuel lines also. I am sure all that fuel is pure varnish by now. It sure would not hurt to drop a little oil in the cylinders just to make sure the rings are not seized, or at least to help prevent any dry start scarring.
Make sure you change the oil.....When you get her running, make sure she does not overheat from a stuck thermostat. Hopefullly it has antfreeze in it, and not rust.
GL man. Welcome back to 2 wheels!!
