Sounds like your head is in the right place; safety, less power, and self control. The 250 will enable you to learn the skills you need, and be a good bike to take the endorsement test on. However, you'll find that you will likely "outgrow" the 250 in less than a year, so be considering your next bike. Personally, I would suggest an older 600 for starters, because although they have more power, it's part of the learning curve in NOT using it every time you go for a ride. That power, however, can get you out of bad situations sometimes, as well as overtaking other vehicles. I would not recommend a 250 for the interstate or to take your girlfriend on, simply due to the size/power issue. I just don't want to see you get something with which you'll want to reasonably do more than you should. Clark, welcome to the forums. Power is all about control.

but sir, i want a sport bike that i can ride comfortably on the road. i am looking for a street bike.
Alright.....I'm just saying. Hey you can always have two 250's, one for the street and one for off road. Oh wait that's why I bought the bike I did, so I could do both. But get the bike you want, not the bike other people think you should get. Have fun.

a 250 is a good start - i'd recommend getting a slightly used 25 - you can get a good deal on one that is about 2 years old.

Went down to the shop today and sat on the 250 and really just fall in love with the bike the more i am on it. I just hope that it will be alright for riding on the interstate because that will be alot of what I am doing.
