RE: Hello, what's up for2008 dualie?
Well we havn't been to the dealer show yet, it's next week, but have confirmation from our District Manager with Kawasaki, there won't be a new dual sport versionof theKLX450R for 08.
We are converting a couple for a specific trip, but the hot line at kawasaki said that this race motor won't hold up to street use as it is specifically designed for racing and needs lots of maintenance. I researched this quite a lot as the reason we are converting is for a 5000 mile off road adventure that takes approx 30 days to complete. The KLX450R motor needs valve adjustments are every 600 miles! Oil and filter changes are quite regular also(can't remember the range on that at the moment). They felt that this motor would be a problem on the trip as we would over-work it during the duration of the trip if we didn't take steps to perform the required maintenance.
But in their line up of dual sports- the KLX250S is underpowered for the task at hand, and KLR650 is a huge bike with good range, but too big and heavy in the dirt.
So there comes the KLX450R(AWESOME) with a stator rewind for more output, and added street legal goodies, wha la, we have the ultimate ds bike with race size and handling. Now to get a bit of range out of her...... IMS 3.2 tank good for 75-80 miles (I know aprx 25 mpg) and the addition of an aux tank rack mounted and here we go. Well in June 08 we'll go........ GO WEST YOUNG MAN! someone once said.

They say the first step to recovery is admitting it....
(I, too, have taken the less-trodden path. I have an old Husky 390;a brute of a bike. Shhhh, don't tell the others...)

RE: Hello, what's up for2008 dualie?
KLX450R, I'm disappointed to hear about the maintenance needed for the 450 engine; I think the ds world needs a modern XL-type bike, with a bulletproof air cooled motor that doesn't have to be worked on all the time, a 34" seat height, disc brakes, and a 2 1/2 gal. tank. I will probably end up with the KLX250, since I can't afford the Husky, and in the meantime I will continue to thrash around on my little XL200R.
