Yep. That's probably least invasive. You can also pull the headstock (triple) and put in fresh bearings, as well as fresh springs in the forks.
Your front tire is a wealth of information on this (and similar) bike. Watch for cupping, uneven wear, etc. and maintain good tire pressure. Tank slappers are not funny at any speed.

Well I did some work on the front end yesterday and the bike feels totally different. I pulled the forks, changed the fork seal and put in a new set of progressive springs. The springs that were in there were progressive as well but they were a full two inches shorter than the ones I replaced them with. I guess all those miles squashed'em down. I also repacked my bearings and bled my brakes. While I was in there I fixed an issue I had with the tachometer mounting and re-arranged my fairing placement. That took most of a day, especially since I had to go to harbor freight 3 times to get more tools.

Now it's pouring rain outside. :(

I'll get to test it all out as soon as it dries up a bit. The bike sits a lot higher up and there isn't nearly as much play on the forks. All in all I think it went well. Thanks for the suggestion.

Give us a ride report; proof's in the pudding. Glad things went well on the wrenching (and a reason to buy more tools!) Should feel much better and safer.
