Soooo.. I picked up a bike and it's starting to feel like Frankenstein bike! There are no papers and the VIN was present so i felt comfortable purchasing it. I got it for $500. Brought it home, cleaned the carb changed the fluid and attempted to start it. BINGO! It started but revved like crazy for what seemed like forever, but then ended up mellowing out (turns out this is pretty common with this year bike on a cold start). I played around with the idle and eventually got it to idle and rev up. SCORE!
Next I needed to check the transmission. Every time I was trying to go, it would stall. After more researching it seems the plates get stuck.. Plenty or forums and videos explaining what to do! After some time trying I eventually got it to take off from idle using the clutch! SCORE AGAIN. At this point I feel like I got a running bike that just needs to fine tuning and TLC!!!
At this point i start replacing/rebuilding items that I could. I eventually came to the front forks. Issues begin! The fork rebuild kit I purchased did NOT fit, they were for a 47mm shock. I measured mine and they are 48MM. More research happens and it appears 48's were placed in '02 and up. Ordered a '02 kit and BINGO. Swapped out and happy! The back shock rebuild kit appeared to be correct.
I checked my reeds and they were broken. I would like to purchase replacements but not I'm not sure what engine I have. It looks like someone scratched out the VIN on the engine. My speculation is a PO moved items from a '02 to my '01 frame. If not all, atleast some and now I don't know what is what. Luckily it looks like these years are pretty interchangable, but i also ready and 2002 has some YEAR SPECIFIC parts.
According to the VIN, the Frame year model is a 2001.
My Forks are 48MM
My Exhaust brackets does not mount at the bottom (bent bracket or wrong exhaust). It's a FMF Gnarly with 109 K G 73 imprinted on the top.
My Carburetor is a Keihin with the number PWK G667 APGJ imprinted on it.
I was hoping anyone more experienced that me (which isn't hard) me be able to provide some differences. It looks like possibly some power valve size diffrence? but any help would be appriciated!!!
