Tires, handlebars, and respring/revalve the forks and shock, bashplate, handguards, and rear fender trim because it will get mashed by the rear tire eventually if you ride hard enough.

 

I cant believe I am the first one to go down this road....

1. Go big or go home and big bore it. It desperately needs the power. That also means you have to a couple things at the same time
A) install the klx300 Dynojet, carb kit
B) You need a better exhaust to help it now breathe to take advantage of the larger cylinder.
C) To help it get more oxygen in- replace the stock snorkle with one off a kdx of the same year.

2. So now that your bike runs like a raped ape go get some bark busters to save your fingers from branches.

3. Then go get the bike new fork springs and depending on your weight a new rear spring and shock

4. Then set the sag so the bike handles better for your weight

5. The quite spending money on it you will go broke and go ride it.

 

Thanks for all the great advice. I will be starting tomorrow for the handlebars and bark busters then on to tires. I already have the pelican box for the rack and the GPS to adventure. Thanks again. Now for the wife thing. Had to be nice on this one. She just gave birth to our son (first child) on Thanks Giving Day. Now I got the bike, she could care less. You got to love a woman who says "you better use it, I don't want it sitting in the garage". Pics will be soon.

Here's the real deal... Just enjoy the bike. Ride it for a while and see what you think it needs. I've done lots of mods to my bike but it's all personal preference. The bike is great bone stock, but depending on your riding style, ability, or how much you like to tinker, it can be even better. I say ride the bike for a month and then start looking into some of the recommendations above. I can't think of a single mod that is ABSOLUTELY necessary if you are riding on the street with the occasional jaunt into the woods.
