Default Trying to decide upgrade path

So, i'll be coming into some money soon (Christmas cash in tandem with a winter job), and i'm trying to decide what my upgrade path is going to be.

Here's what i'm looking to have on my bike once i'm finished:

a set of D606s (how much did you folks pay, and from where did you purchase?)
skidplate (70 USD?)
widened footpegs (30 USD)
an FMF system (500+ USD)
rejet + UNI filter (80 USD)
a set of Pro Taper bars (70 USD)
an aftermarket throttle assy (30 USD?)

My options are to either perform surgery on the bikes airways (FMF system, Rejet + Filter, and D606s), which will most likely run me around 700 USD, or to work out the kinks in the ergos (Bars, Throttle Assy, peg wideners, D606s, skidplate, and MAYBE rejetting + baffle drilling to tide me over power wise), which will run around 320 USD.

I'm wondering, which of you folks think is more important. On the one hand, all the power in the world isn't very useful if the bike handle's like **** (which it doesn't at current, just a few kinks here and there), but on the flip side, you can always adapt to a bikes ergos and compensate with riding ability, but you can't always compensate for power with riding ability.

Another random Q, what sort of paint should I use to go about respraying my headlight shroud green? I really don't like the white on green, and thought the green on green of the earlier models was pretty damned sexy.

dude, you're young. save your money you don't have yet. the only things you mention that are really going to make a diff is the pipe and the tires. everything else is just fluff. plus, by going with a cheaper pipe like a BG ($390) you would save money. are your bars bent? if not, why replace them? you're not a pro and therefore will adapt automatically to your oem bars. do you really need wider pegs? come on, I raced for almost 10 years and was never at a loss for footing w/oem Kawi pegs, just keep 'em sharp. are you a professional enduro racer? probably not, do you really need that skidplate? I see a lot of guys get caught up in what others put on their bikes and then think they need it too. Unless you're riding boulders, which with the stock carb I doubt you are, the stock KLX frame protectors will do the job along with the undercarriage skid. I'm not telling you not to buy what you want, but just throwing caution into the wind on mods that you'll never get your money back on when you sell the bike in a year or two for that real dirt bike that you want so bad. Modding the KLX is like modding a Mustang V6 (yeah, people do it), it will improve it substantially but it will never run like a bone stock GT (a WR or TE) and when you go to trade it off you won't get any return on your mods and could quite possibly see a reduction in value just because of the mods, depends on who buys it. Just some stuff to think about.

btw- by my calculations, I just saved you $270 and I think your rejetting and Uni-Filter ballparks are high. I paid $25 for my Uni and around $36 for my N1TC, collars and clips, and my main jet along w/shipping.

skip the bars, (unless you need them; Renthals are cheaper and probably the best non-fat bars imo), skidplate, footpegs, replace FMF with BigGun and huge grin. wala- now you've got money for a Bill Blue 34mm Mikuni and a closer to your "real dirtbike" running KLX (at least you could sell that easily).

What sort of riding do you do? Most of what IG said I agree with (don't faint everyone) except for the bash plate. The bash plate has saved my cases a few times and it is something I wouldn't skimp on. Oh yeah I wouldn't touch a Big Gun with a 12 foot barge pole. Do you stand up a lot? If so the wider pegs are probably a good buy otherwise you don't need them, otherwise I agree with IG

It has been my experience thatthe BigGun flatout kicks **** and I endorse it fully. And let me tell you, I am one tough cookie to satisfy or please. If I get another KLX, I will get another BG. If your feet get sore from standing up too much, you probably are standing up too much or your boots have cheap soles in them with no steel shank. I never could figure out why people stood up so much when riding/racing. I mean it's required at times, but I could always go faster sitting down with my head and chest extended low and toward the front of the bike. To me, standing up just created more drag but youngsters are constantly being told to stand up, well, you can't take a corner standing up and that's where speed is found- in the corners. Just my take on that.

I would touch one with a barge pole if I was paid enough.

sink-don't listen to these guys bashing BigGun. No one on this forum has had any type of problems with the BG itself. Each exhaust has some issues- the BigGun has been prone to rusting if you don't keep it clean and let the mud burn onto it, the Muzzy has serious fitment issues since it was designed for the KLX300 (peg clearance, missing spring hooks, bluing) the staintoon is outrageously priced for what it is, the HMF looks out of place and fits like crap as well, the 2bros. actually doesn't have problems, I just don't like it's looks, and the FMF is all new, unproven, and very expensive as well. For me, the BG is a no-brainer. I'm not meaning to turn this into another exhaust thread, but someone else just did. So I just want you to hear it from the horses mouth, the BG is the ZO6 among Ferrari's.

I didn't bash Big Gun, I stated my opinion based on what I have read here and in other forums. PLENTY of people on this and other forums have had problems with both the product and attemting to deal with Big Gun the company. ENOUGH SAID !!!

My 2cents.....

Performance & Protection.

If you want cheap performance go a pipe, jetkit, airfilter and 13t sprocket. (i went with a muzzy and its great. - opted for the muzzy beacuse FMF were on a 3month wait).

Also you want to protect your bike, get a skidplate whatever the cost - it generally pays for itself on the first trailride.

As for ergos....well until i bend my bars, i will keep them - although i did buy a bar riser kit for 35 aussie dollars (and some barkbusters yesterday but thats a different story!). What goodare decentergos on a bike with little power?

In closing......Performance & Protection.
