Trouble with longer throttle cables

I thought getting longer cables would be simple, but I thought wrong. :(

Motion Pro doesn't have the specs on my KLX from Taiwan. The numbers don't match up. Luckily the clutch cable is the same as the US, but not the throttle cables.

At this point I can either take a chance and get longer cables based on the US version, or mail them my cables and be the guinea pig that pays a higher price than normal ($42.00-$65.00 per cable)...ugh...

Has anyone with an Asian FI bike gotten cable from MP? What was your experience?

What about cable extender kits? I need like 3 inches. Seems a waste of cash to for just 3 inches. Wouldn't it be possible to pull out the old cable from the housing, put in a longer one, then figure out something to cover the new extra 3 inches? Might not look pretty...but who cares, right?

Any other ideas?

Per U.S. Kawasaki parts, carbureted bike since that is all that came to the States:
  • 54012-0224 CABLE-THROTTLE,OPENING
  • 54012-0230 CABLE-THROTTLE,CLOSING

Per Coastal Motorcycle Centre NSW Australia up to 2016:
  • 54012-0224 CABLE-THROTTLE,OPENING
  • 54012-0230 CABLE-THROTTLE,CLOSING

The longer Motion Pro stuff should work fine based on the information on parts from the carbed and EFI bikes. Look it up yourself if you wish

You could try building your own Cable Kits and Parts - Products | Venhill USA it may not save you money at least they will fit and be the length you want.

I agree that they should be (about?) the same. Maybe a difference at the very end...a bit shorter/longer? Otherwise I'm not sure why they would make them different part numbers. Mine being:

12-0263
12-0264

I'm getting 3.5" risers...so maybe I go with US throttle cables and play it safe with a bit of extra length? Like maybe +5 or +6. Worse case they're 1.5~2.5" too long. Any harm in that where cables are concerned?

You've opened a can of worms there! (For me at least) :)

I'll take a closer look in the morning. Thanks for the link

Who's to say they charge everyone who wants longer cables the increased price under the guise of "we've never made this before"... when they have and do. :)

I took actual Kawsaki part numbers, not the numbers on the cable housing which may or may not have anything to do with the length of the internal cable. That cable housing number may or may not have any meaning, but if it does, it is not documented anywhere I've seen. The part number is documented by Kawasaki.

Having ordered parts that have come from overseas, specifically side covers for a 1990 Zephyr 550 that had to be imported by Kawasaki USA, had the same part numbers world wide. It just took a month for them to show up. We ordered like normal, the labeling showed it came over seas.

From that experience and that the bikes and parts come from the same plants, the same part number will bring the same part, within tolerances specified, but the same none the less. Not about the same.

I finally got around to putting on the risers and getting the new cables on. I decided to make them myself with supplies from Venhill - it was WAY cheaper for me in the long run.

On a separate note, I found a local KLX guy who had a Motion Pro stock pull cable. Got it cheap. I wasn't planning to use it, just compare it to mine. He said he bought it and it didn't fit. I was originally planning to use it for parts if need be.

Comparing my cable and this one, they are nearly identical. About the same length overall. The only difference is the part that goes into the carb/FI. On the MP cable it has the two nuts and screw type ferrule at the end. Mine has a bent tube type ferrule. (See pics)

I'm thinking the MP cable could be made to work possibly. I didn't look in detail. But it might not "seal" properly like the stock ferrules do. I don't know if they are meant to seal, but the inside part where the cables come out into the FI on my bike is really clean. No dust/dirt to speak of. And that's saying something considering where I ride! :)

Anyway, it looks like there's a slight difference then. Unless MP has some slightly different variation that works? IDK

And I must say, making your own cables is fun! A solder pot, good solder, good flux and you're set!
