Transporting the KLX

I'm curious to see how everyone else transports their KLX when the destination is too far to ride. I was praying the KLX would fit in the back of the wife's Avalanche with the tail gate up so I can still tow a camper so I decided to find out yesterday.

Attachment 8599

I added a few tie downs just for good measure but it's wedged in there so snug it's not going anywhere. :) Now I need to start planning some Colorado camping trips for next year.

klx678 10-26-2015 12:42 AM

Whatever it takes. The more restricted the better. Looks pretty solid in the picture.

one other possibility is to make up a sort of Reese hitch deal on the back of the trailer to carry a bike rack set up. My one friend did it on the front of his truck to carry his pit bikes when towing his fifth wheel trailer on his truck. One more shot is if there is enough room to put a channel on the trailer tongue. Just some thoughts.

toomanytoys84 10-26-2015 01:15 AM

I haul mine is a Toyota Tacoma double cab short bed. 5' bed. Have to leave the tail gate down. Strap off each side of the handle bars and crank it down till the forks are bottomed out.

Hauled it 300 miles in one trip this way. No issues never moved a bit.

I wish I could put the tail gate up but these midsize quad cab trucks have such tiny beds.

Werloc 10-26-2015 02:52 AM

Tacoma double cab here too, but I'm to old to ramp up that high anymore. My trailer floor is only 15" high, plus after riding all day, then driving home, I pull in my driveway, and walk into the house. Before this, I had a hitch carrier.

as for the OP, I have a Tundra with a 6.5 foot bed. I can get my bike in there by itself on a diagonal, but then nothing else fits. If I want to take two bikes, they have to be straight, so I got one of those bed-extenders. Best money I've spent in a long time.

Xt225....?

I have a slammed Ranger:

https://www.bikepics.com/pics/2013%5...91841-full.jpg

I can roll the bike up the ramp into the truck, tie it down, then unload it alone. I can roll it up, stop it and step up into the bed to finish moving it around and tying it down. Easy loading of anything. I can almost reach from one side to the other while standing beside it. Best thing I ever did with my trucks. I ride the bike off road, not the truck, so I don't care about clearance and all.

Then there is the 5x10 enclosed trailer with the drop gate back that my wife and I share. She puts her craft display and product in in for a couple months from Oct-Dec. I have it if I want for the rest of the year.

That was my concern with the Avalanche. The bed is almost 20 inches shorter than a Silverado short bed. That's why the 6' folding ramp is sticking out the top of the tailgate. ;)

Here it is with the tail gate down. When I loaded it up yesterday to bring it home after a fun day of trail riding I didn't get it lined up quite as well and there was so much pressure on the tail gate I had to drop the inside wall of the Avalanche to release the pressure to get the tail gate open. :p

And here was the inspiration for trying to load it up that way in the first place. My previous dual sport, a 1999 Yamaha TW200.

Attachment 8596

it was a shorter wheel base so a little easier to fit but nowhere near as versatile of a bike.

Yep. It's the 2006 XT 225 that is the wife's. She only rode for one year. And so it sits in the garage.

Good buy if you have Amazon Prime.

I had a veteran hitch installer look over this rig and he states with the KLX it is at the limit for Class II tongue weight (250-350 lbs) on my RV. I have used it on a lot of rough roads and keep a close eye on it.

Ha, Mine too. Great little bikes for what they are. Mine was a 2009. I put and XT225 tank on it for extra range.

TW 200 are awesome bikes!!! Way more stable on the gravel.

toomanytoys84 10-27-2015 08:49 PM

Seeing that makes me want an XT225 in the garage as well.

Michaelb2 10-27-2015 11:19 PM

Do they have a lower seat height than average? It looks nice and low.

Werloc 10-28-2015 12:43 AM

The TW200 has about 30" seat hight with fat rear tire. It's geared low and is a work horse. It can go places others can't. Not fast, but it has it's purpose, and does very well. I got one due to low seat hight. Having 2 failed back surgeries years ago, I started riding again with this bike. When I got stronger, thanks to the TW, I ended up getting my KLX. They are bullet proof, and simple bikes. Perfect for beginners, but most popular with older riders that are mellowed out but still able to ride. The TW200 is the best forum on the planet. Ask anything, you'll have a ton of replies in 15 minutes. I've made a few lifetime friends over there that I still ride with weekly. Great members, more like a close family. Nice and very helpful folks. Many group rides in most states. I'll always be active over there. If anyone ever gets one of these, or joins to learn more about them, tell them I sent ya.....;)

noahnsteph 10-28-2015 12:51 AM

The TW was a fun toy for sure but it only went about 10mph per gear so it was desperately needing a 6th gear. It was too slow to actually ride to the places I wanted to ride. That's why I switched to the KLX.

You uncivilized brutes who are hauling your dear little KLX's out in the elements! Don't you have any love for your bike?:D

Werloc 10-28-2015 02:22 AM

Yes, me too. Plus only 6" travel suspension. Hey, the bike is exactly the same now as it was in 1987. Only changes were 2001, different carb, and front disk brake, and removed kickstart. The bike is still air cooled, but it is a work horse for sure. Comfy cruising speed is only 55mph with stock gearing, top speed around 68mph. Like a trials bike, it has it's purpose. And it's great for slow trail riding, snow, mud, and will climb hills that the KLX can't with ease. Used by ranchers, hunters, patrol, campers, etc, it's more of a utility bike. I will get another one when I'm older, mellow out riding, and unable to throw my leg over a normal sized Dual Sport. I would still have mine if I didn't ride with KTMs, WRRs, DRZs, etc. where I ride is sandy and loaded with deep whoops. So I needed decent suspension. Great bike for your kids, wife, or when you get old and slow down a bit. If I could afford 2 bikes, I would have never sold it. I do miss it with Winter coming up.

Yeah, hard to tell what that is, a toy hauler maybe? Yep, my TW was hanging off my bumper, but have a 5x8 enclosed for my beloved KLX pictured on first page.

Yeah, now why would anyone travel with their dual sport out in the elements? It's goin to get dirty......:p

Mine doesn't like sitting at a desk doing paper work. It ask me to put a wet bar in my trailer, top shelf oil on tap and a few bottles of chain lube and filter oil for an occasional shot.:rolleyes:

Brag brag brag. LOL TNC has got a great set up. Hi TNC!!!

I have had an aluminum hitch hauler for about 8 years. It made me nervous at first but have put 1000's of miles on it with no issue. Back and forth to CO. numerous times and many miles around here. One of the best things i have ever bought.

Hey Dan...long time no hear. Man, I gotta tell ya...from many years sleeping and camping in my van on these dirt bike trips, the toy hauler has definitely made life an absolute luxury for this past year or so. Utah last month was a hoot. Still wish you'd load up and meet up on one of those trips before I get too old to stay on my KLX...LOL!:D

dan888 11-01-2015 11:20 AM

Hey TNC, we would have a blast. I don't really have a great reason for not heading out there if you think of it in the "life is too short" frame of mind, but if you look at it in the every day hustle and bustle, i have to say i don't have the time or money to justify it. Just getting 3 other buddies on the same page to go do and enduro ride today was a feat, and then it just got cancelled because of way too much rain :( I have the Husky for the tight woods stuff but i still have the KLX, and after ridding it out in CO earlier this year it reminded me what great bike it is. the Husky has it beat in the woods but the Kawi is the better all around bike.

BillMoore 11-18-2015 03:26 AM

It depends on the trip... truck, truck/trailer, or truck/toyhauler depending on where we're going and what we're doing.

This little fold up trailer works pretty well. It has a solid axle so
it bounces around a bit. The previous owner transported a
Harley from Florida to here in Washington on it.
