If I go out far, or by myself, I carry a handheld CB radio in my tankbag. It's been my experience that you can just about always pick up someone on a CB no matter where you are. Since we are talking emergency here, I don't care who I pickup, just someone who may have access to a phone for emergency services. I use a Cobra 38 WXST, but there are many models out there to choose from. A signal mirror is compact and not a bad idea either, if you are going "out there".

I usually have on me when forest riding:

Firesteel/flint
20yds or so of fishing line and small hooks/rubber grubs
multi-tool
finger chainsaw
a dozen vicodin incase I break something and need some trail-side meds
snacks, fruit, canned fish
2-3 liters of water in camelbak
About 50ft of strong twine
length of duct tape
length of bailing wire
Co2 tire pump, patches
8mm, 10mm, 12mm sockets
tow strap about 15ft long
bunjee cords

I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff, but that's typical

I carry lots of crap that I'm too lazy to mention here, but two items I wouldn't be without is a SPOT and a set of Tubliss tire inserts. Neither have let me down.

I once saw instructions for towing, peg to peg, but with a quick-release mechanism kind of like a snare, connected via small rope to the left hand to disconnect if things suddenly got bad.

I like that this thread has taken a turn to personal safety & first-aid.*

On that subject, I agree with the recommendation to bring a Spot Locator; I use mine year round on my bike, sled, hiking, camping & snowshoeing.

I'd also recommend bringing a tube of Krazy Glue to use as liquid stitches. In addition to closing up numerous flesh cuts, I have also had the unfortunate occasion to glue the tip of my finger back on out in a remote part of Northern Nevada years ago. I suffered NO long term consequences of my decidedly redneck form of medicine!

GPS, Gun, Water, and Phone. Small tool set, and extra fuel, first aid kit, and a knife.
