A tricked out 4stroke.. never rode one.. but i am willing to bet it could keep up.
a newer fi bike may do well but when it comes to sand the 2 stroke will remain king i have yet to find a 4 stoke that can keep up with my cr500 in the dunes

I'm looking for an 02 cr250 to convert into a 500AF. Used to ride a kx500 and it was fun but wasn't the best setup for woods work.

to the best of my knowledge 2001 was the last year the 500 was made, i didn't feel like the kx was the power house the cr or even the yz490 are the only bike i have found that was more of a beast the the cr is my uncles ktm590 but the left side kick never really worked right for me lol

The reason i want to do a cr500 conversion is the motor is more mellow to me than the kx500. I had a 490 and it was a good all around motor but wasn't anything like a kx5. The ktm is a beast but it handles like one too...one of the reasons I want an alu frame.

I've been on a 01 cr500. Started first kick and scared the crap right outa me. That's a big bike lol. My yz was a 295 and ran like a raped ape, but i don't have the ***** to twist the throttle much on the 500's

i've done some single track on it never get much over 2nd at 1/4 throttle but in the desert you can really open her up i've been on 2 strokes since day one and i guess i'm just used to it now i really think power level is something that you get acclimatized to and power delivery as well when i ride 450's or a friends 650r they all talk about all the power there bikes have and for me i'm always waiting for the big hit like you get on a 2 stroke and its never there i guess thats why i have stuck with the 2 strokes and lets face it nothing beats the smell of running premix and the sound of a bike getting on pipe,

What he said. Stand on the pegs, get your butt back and pin it. The stock tires suck, but will do for what you are describing. The stock tires get real bad in deep sandy singletrack. I have had the best overall ride with an MT43 on the rear and an MT21 up front.
