Default Stupid Air Filter Question...

I have no other way to confirm this....do any of the aftermarket filters come with their own cage? I want to ditch my K&N and go with a Twin or Uni, but I do not have my OEM cage, so checking to see if I should pick one up or not.

Any help would really be appreciated. TIA.

I had the same question the other day but just ended up buying the K&N. Where can you get the cages?

If I'm looking at the right part, you can get it off Bike Bandit. Not cheap though.

The only "stupid filter question" is whether to run one or not!

Now on topic, I'd buy the frame from Kaw and run a foam filter if you plan any dusty road or off road riding. K&N are fine for road use, but they don't stop fine dirt as well as foam. That's why you don't see K&N filters on MX and off road bikes. Even the flat trackers will use the extra foam sock on their K&Ns. Foam is best for fine dust and stuff.

There must be two kinds of k&n's, because the one's I've been using the last twenty years work fine. I guess it could be I'm just old and confused.

Maybe so. Seems many experienced off roaders don't use K&Ns without at least a foam sock cover for it. The only way to get the higher flow than a foam filter is to be more porous. It ain't magic. If you find one pro motocrosser who runs K&N filters without the foam sock on a dusty track I'd be totally amazed - unless they have some sponsorship of course.

Besides if you do the research on the web you will find exactly what I am saying being documented both in tests and personal use. Riders find dirt in the carb mouth after running the K&Ns in dust.

http://www.ctracing.com/air.htm

http://forums.off-road.com/atv-loung...airfilter.html A two stroke forum where the dirt would be sucked right through the entire engine, bottom end and all.

then there is K&N's own solution... http://www.knfilters.com/airforcewraps.htm

I don't get it with the wraps, why have a filter for larger particles after the sock for finer particles? I mean i dont get it why not have just the wrap or another foam filter in those use cases.

Anyway as long as stock foam filter isn't crumbling it's fine. And old enough and neglected yeah they crumble like old headphones foam. Really nasty.
