Default Street Wheels/Tyres

The KLX is my work transport and takes me the 80km (return trip) to work each day on bitumen/tar. It is also my weekend machine for trail riding.
The original rear tyre is probably 500km off needing replacement and I have been looking into having a set of tyres for the commute and a set of tyres for the bush.
I noticed that alot of people have gone to 17" rims when fitting street biased tyres, what is the main reason for not staying with the stock rims?
What are your recommendations for a street biased tyre?

Thanks for your input.

im using midas E-07, there a 50/50 mix. does get interesting when i riding with 450 on knobbies but its more fun, traction is pretty good off road

mud isnt too bad but could be alot better. on road you can fault them. great traction, smooth and loves the conners. friend of mine on 650 currently has 14000 km! and he thinks that he has about 2000-3000 k's left. im expecting around the 20 000 km mark for mine.

i like the option of doing long distances with out new tires every time(on dirt and road), they havent stopped me from going anywhere or any hill climbs, just more slippery.

i have the same i dear as you, i use my bike for transport and weekend toy, out of 1000km's i do 600-800 road and 400-200 dirt... great tire for me, but i would like to have a spare set of knobbies for the days in the bush

I went with the 17s because I wanted a second set of rims that wwere dedicated to the street. They were cheaper used than new anything. If you want street tires for stock rims check out Avon distanzias.

the excel 17's are a little wider, and offer a stiffer rim for better cornering with less flex, and most good street tires are in the 17" size range anyway. with the 17" rims, you can take corners the same as a street bike, if not a little better.

I'm cheap so I bought a 2nd set of stock rims off e-bay and run some barracuda's on them. For the amount of street riding I do they do alright. No highway's. Just surface streets to and from work occasionally. It's a hoot running street tires on the klx. Matter of fact I think I'll go out and swap my rim's right now.
